Why See the Book of Kells with a Guide?
The Book of Kells is one of the world’s most extraordinary surviving artefacts — a 9th-century illuminated Gospel manuscript created by Celtic monks on the island of Iona, then carried to Kells in Ireland to survive the Viking raids. Today it is displayed in the Treasury of Trinity College’s Old Library, at the heart of Dublin’s oldest university, where it has drawn visitors from around the world for generations.
Visiting on your own is perfectly possible, but a guided tour transforms the experience in ways that matter. The exhibition spans two rooms: the Turning Darkness into Light gallery (which gives context) and the Treasury room where the manuscript pages are open under soft light. Without context, it is easy to spend five minutes and leave. With an expert local guide, you learn to read the art: to recognise the interlace knotwork, the vivid lapis lazuli and oak-gall inks, the tiny figures tucked into capital letters, the uncial script that shaped the Latin alphabet used across Western Europe. You understand that these pages were not merely written — they were prayed over, and the act of making each ornament was itself an act of worship.
The Long Room
After the manuscript galleries, most tours continue to the Long Room — a barrel-vaulted library that stretches 65 metres and is one of Europe’s great library interiors, familiar to many as a filming inspiration for the Jedi Archives. Marble busts of scholars line the hall and the Trinity College Harp — one of Ireland’s oldest surviving harps and the model for the national symbol on the Irish euro coin — is displayed here.
The Old Library is currently the focus of a major conservation project. Most of the Long Room’s 200,000 antique books have been carefully removed for cleaning and cataloguing, and digital screens now let visitors watch the conservators at work — a rare behind-the-scenes look at how one of the world’s great libraries is being preserved. The Long Room remains open to visit through 2027, and the Book of Kells stays on display throughout (after 2027 it moves to the beautifully restored Printing House on campus). The Long Room is included in most Book of Kells tour tickets.
Dublin Castle and the Old City
The best-value tours pair the Book of Kells with Dublin Castle, a 10-minute walk south along Dame Street. Dublin Castle is not merely a tourist site — it was the administrative seat of British rule in Ireland for 700 years, from the Norman occupation in 1204 until the handover to the Irish Free State in 1922. Michael Collins received the keys at the State Apartments in January 1922. The Chester Beatty Library, adjacent to the castle gardens, houses one of the world’s finest collections of Islamic and Asian manuscripts — including Quranic pages contemporary with the Book of Kells.
Christ Church Cathedral
Several tours also include Christ Church Cathedral, built on the site of a Viking-era wooden church in 1028. The medieval nave and crypt date to the 12th century. The crypt is one of the longest in Britain or Ireland and gives a vivid sense of the Hiberno-Norse city that pre-dates any guidebook account of Dublin.
Practical Information
- Meeting point: Most tours meet at the Trinity College main gates on College Green, Dublin 2.
- What to bring: Comfortable shoes (cobblestones in the Old City), a light layer (interiors are cool), and a photo ID if you pre-booked online tickets.
- Photography: Permitted in the Long Room and throughout Dublin Castle; not permitted in the Book of Kells Treasury room.
- Booking ahead: Strongly advised — the exhibition regularly sells out in peak season (June–August). Fast-track tickets avoid separate queue.
- Getting there: The College Green entrance is served by multiple Dublin Bus routes and is 12 minutes’ walk from Heuston Station and 8 minutes from Tara Street DART station.

The Book of Kells is a 9th-century illuminated manuscript Gospel book, regarded as one of the finest examples of Insular art. Created by Celtic monks around 800 AD, it is on display in Trinity College Dublin's Old Library. Read our full explainer on what the Book of Kells is and why it matters.
Absolutely. The intricate illuminations — created over 1,200 years ago using natural pigments — are extraordinary to see in person. Early morning entry (with a fast-track ticket) is best to avoid crowds. Weekday visits are quieter than weekends. Peak season is June–August; spring and autumn offer a good balance of decent weather and shorter queues. Our best time to visit guide breaks it down by season.
Yes. Trinity College's Old Library is undergoing a major conservation project, so most of the Long Room's 200,000 books have been temporarily removed and digital screens now show the work in progress. The Long Room remains open to visit through 2027, and the Book of Kells stays on display throughout.
The Book of Kells exhibition ground floor and the lower level of the Old Library are wheelchair accessible. The Long Room gallery level has limited accessibility — contact Trinity College in advance if this is a concern.
